Watching MTV, he picked up the basics of beat boxing and kept working on his beats. Self-taught for five years now, Gauchan has created a niche for himself.[break]
The talented beat boxer who is a well known B-boy (a break dancer) says, “I choose to beat box and B-boy. This wasn’t forced onto me, that’s why I love what I do.”
His Everest B-boy Group, one of the pioneer B-boying groups in Nepal, won the Nepal B Boy Championship in 2010.
“B-boying and beat boxing is wrongly associated with drugs and hooliganism. As beat boxers and B-boys, I and my group are trying to change that,” he says.
Besides beat boxing with local artists, Gauchan works as a B-boying instructor for Nepal Breakdance Foundation (NBF) and Sadhana Kala Kendra. More than 300 students have already learnt the dance form from him.

“There’s a wave among youngsters to learn B-boying. Many come to me and want to become professionals on the first day. But once I teach them the correct techniques, most of them back out,” he says.
For him, B-boying is the correct combination of technique, style and individuality.
“You must have concentration and dedication to succeed. If you practice wrongly, there are high chances of getting hurt,” he mentions.
Gauchan also recently went on a tour with artist Salil Subedi to Chitwan as part of the 60+ Earth Hour Celebration organized by WWF (World Wildlife Fund). They were supporting the cause of climate change. He beat boxed to Subedi’s didgeridoo and murchunga tunes.
“I enjoy performing to Nepali musical instruments. The fusion of beat boxing with Nepali tunes makes a wonderful combination,” he expresses.
But often, while performing, Gauchan has to prove to his audience that the sounds really come out from his mouth. Says Gauchan, “People still don’t know what beat boxing is. They are amazed by the beats I produce from my mouth.”
As a practitioner of a much loved art form abroad, but a budding one at home, Gauchan still believes that beat boxing and B-boying has a future in Nepal.
“You don’t have to struggle financially if you have the talents,” he says.
