REPUBLICA, March 24: The Tharu community warned Monday that it will hit the streets again if the first meeting of parliament’s winter session that is scheduled for March 30 does not meet its demand for identity as separate indigenous group.

Making public during a press conference Monday the decisions of a meeting that was held to evaluate the implementation of agreements with the government and the 14 days of protests by the Tharu community, Tharu leaders warned of such protest.

The meeting also decided to organize a mass interaction and a torch rally with participation from Tharus, Muslims, and indigenous groups in Kathmandu on March 30 to press their demands.

The evaluation meeting also succeeded in uniting Tharu leaders who had shown divisions during the 14 days of protests by Tharu community.

The meeting also decided that the fight by the Tharu community will be a fight for identity rather than a political one. There were over 300 participants in the meeting. Among the participants were Laxman Tharu, coordinator of Tharuhat Struggle Committee, Asthabhuja Chowdhary and Raj Kumar Lekhi, chairperson and general secretary respectively of Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha, and members of Tharu organizations.
