Tara Devi Pun sets 4 national records

KATHMANDU, April 16: Nepal Police Club´s female weightlifter Tara Devi Pun set four national records at the Shalimar First Women´s and Men´s Open National Weightlifting Championship in Birgunj as records tumbled on the first day of the championship on Tuesday.



Nepal Army weightlifter Kamal Bahadur Adhikari set three national records, while Devi Chaudhary and Uttam Khatri of Police and Gopal Bahadur Shrestha of Star Casino also wrote their names into the record books. [break]



Pun set two national records in clean and jerk, and one each in snatch and in total to better her own previous records. Pun, 29, who competed in the heavyweight category (+75 kg), lifted 67 kg in snatch bettering her record by 1 kg. She set two records in jerk, first lifting 91 kg and later 95 kg. Earlier, she held the record of 90 kg in jerk.



She also set a new record in total weight lifting 162 kg. Earlier, Pun held the national record of 156 kg. Pun, the strongest woman of 2068 BS, had earlier set the national record during the Second Grand Prix held some six months ago in Kathmandu.



"A player dreams of becoming the best in his or her discipline and I am very happy with my achievement," said the winner of the last edition of Pulsar Woman Player of the Year. "My coach and I were confident that I will break the record."



The Nepal Police Club athlete said, "I want to do better than this in future. My target is to win medal in the South Asian Games (SAG) but the uncertainty over the next edition of SAG worries players like me."



In the men´s 77 kg category, South Asian Games medalist Kamal Bahadur Adhikari set three national records bettering his own previous records. Adhikari lifted 122 kg in snatch to better his previous record by 1 kg, and lifted 162 kg in clean and jerk surpassing his previous record of 161 kg. He also set a new record in total with 282 kg. Adhikari had earlier set a national record of 280 kg in the Grand Prix.



Adhikari´s teammate Surendra Shrestha lifted 90 kg in snatch and 144 kg in clean and jerk to secure second position in the category. Likki Thapa of Nepal Police finished third lifting 87 kg in snatch and 133 in clean and jerk.



In the men´s above-105 kg category, Gopal Bahadur Shrestha of Star Casino set a national record in clean and jerk lifting 156 kg bettering his own record set during the 2011 SAG by 1 kg. Shrestha lifted 115 kg in snatch and 217 kg in total to claim the gold medal. Pukar Gurung of Chitwan finished second lifting 90 kg in snatch and 117 in clean and jerk. Ramesh Mahato of Parsa finished third.



In 105 kg, Bipendra Maharjan of Police lifted 96 kg in snatch and 123 in clean and jerk with a total of 219 kg for gold. Ram Dayal Mahato of Saptari lifted 98 and 120 kg in snatch and clean and jerk respectively to secure second position while Buddhi Bahadur Lama of Army finished third.



In the women´s event, Manita Chaudhary of Siraha lifted 40 kg in snatch and 65 kg in clean and jerk. Only two weightlifters had competed in the event.



In the women´s 53 kg category, Devi Chaudhary of Police set two national records in snatch. Chaudhary first lifted 58 kg to break the previous record of 57 kg set by Jhanta Katuwal in 2066 BS. Chaudhary later lifted 59 kg to better her own record. In clean and jerk, Chaudhary lifted 72 kg to take the gold medal.



In the same weight category, Manisha Chaudhary of Morang lifted 41 kg in snatch while Punam Pariyar of Kaski lifted 40 kg. In clean and jerk, Pariyar lifted 55 kg and Chaudhay 45 kg.



In the women´s 58 kg category, Uttam Khatri of Police set a national record in clean and jerk lifting 78 kg. Khatri broke Jhanta Katuwal´s record of 77 kg set in 2066 BS in Birgunj. In snatch, Khatri lifted 60 kg. In the same event, Raj Kumari Chaudhay of Chitwan lifted 50 kg in snatch and 60 kg in clean and jerk. Laxmi Chaudhary of Kailali lifted 30 kg in snatch and 37 kg in clean and jerk.



In the men´s 56 kg category, Laxman Ranjit of Nepal Police won gold lifting 75 kg in snatch and 65 kg in clean and jerk. Ranjit´s teammate Hui Lama lifted 72 kg in snatch and 95 kg in clean and jerk to finish second while Narad Chaudhary lifted 63 kg and 80 kg respectively to take the third position.



Earlier, inaugurating the event, Yuvaraj Lama, the member secretary of National Sports Council, announced a reward of Rs 5,000 for each national record. On the occasion, the organizers felicitated various individuals and organizations who have contributed to the development of the game in Nepal.
