Tamsaling, govt talks inconclusive

KATHMANDU, Aug 1: Talks between the government and the agitating Tamsaling Joint Struggle Committee ended inconclusively on Saturday after the government declined to set up a separate brigade for ethnic Tamang people in the Nepal Army. They will again sit for talks on Sunday.



Tamangs, who reside mostly in the districts surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, have hit the streets demanding autonomy and abolition of Pipa Goswara in Nepal Army where Tamang youths are recruited for menial works at the household of army officers, among other things.



Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong said that the government is ready to upgrade Pipa Goswara to an army brigade, and the Committee should quit their demand.



The government and the Committee members would hold talks Sunday afternoon to strike a deal.
