According to the district administration office (DAO), the sweet shopkeepers are selling under-weight and sub-standard peda.
Following complaints from customers, the DAO launched a surprise monitoring a few days ago and found a majority of the sweet shops selling underweight. Likewise, the shops were operating without Permanent Account Number (PAN) registration. Running any kind of business without PAN registration is illegal.
Assistant Chief District Officer (CDO) Bal Bhadra Giri said, “200 gram packets weighed less than 150 grams. Similarly, packets of 1 kg were merely 800 grams.”
He further said the monitoring team has confiscated rusting and inaccurate weighing rods and old beam balances from the sweet shops. “The shopkeepers were also found selling stale and unhygienic peda,” he added.
Most shopkeepers were selling underweight sweet products that were also unhygienic, he said, adding, “Only a handful of sweet shops had PAN registration.”
The monitoring team inspected 30 shops in Baramajhiya.
Meanwhile, the monitoring team also inspected petrol pumps operating along the highway from Bharda to Rupani. In the course of inspections, petrol pumps were found selling 20 milliliters less in every liter of fuel.
Bhagat Oil Traders in Rupani was closed but this petrol pump had been selling fuel illegally for a long time, said Giri.
The DAO has taken necessary steps to punish the wrongdoer sweet shops and petrol pumps, he said.
