Beneath these settlements is believed to be a big rock which could have probably given a rocksolid support to these places against any tremors, shared Bishwa Kumar Sharma, a local from Surya Binayak in Bhaktapur district.
Although some old houses across Ward Nos 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8 in Suryabinayak Municipality sustained slight cracks, no houses were reported flattened and no death and casualties have been reported as of now.
Similarly, Panauti has also remained unaffected by the quake. Places in between Surya Binayak to Mahadevisthan in Katunje until Sushila Bhariav Sabik VDC is believed to fall under the third belt under the same bedrock.
Madhusudan Guragain, a local journalist, told RSS that the only direct effect caused by the quake was the fall of tiles of houses at a few places in the main market of Panauti.
The foundation of the houses here are supposed to be firm as people have a practicethat anyone building a house here should first find the rock below and erect the foundation.
Interestingly, these places too have remained calm and quiet during the previous two notorious earthquakes, namely the 1934 and 1988 quakes measuring 8.4 and 6.6 on the Richter scale respectively. RSS
