Students to close down fuel stations for 3 days

KATHMANDU, Sept 11: Following hike in petroleum prices by the government on Tuesday, student unions affiliated to various political parties have said that they would close down all petrol pumps across the country for three days from September 14 to protest the price hike.



Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has increased the price of petrol by Rs 5 per liter; diesel and kerosene by Rs 3 per liter and aviation fuel for domestic airlines by Rs 7 per liter.[break]



“A meeting of students´ joint struggle committee has decided to close all petrol pumps for three days,” Ghanshyam Neupane, general secretary of the student wing of Rastriya Janamorcha, told Republica. According to him, they would encircle the NOC office and hold demonstrations in front of colleges in the capital city and other towns on Friday.



Student unions affiliated to UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and various other political parties are constituents of the joint struggle committee.



Meanwhile, student groups from several colleges disrupted vehicular movement for one hour at various places in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning.



Raj Kumar Rai, chairman of Free Student Union at RR Campus, who led the demonstrations in front of the college said that they took to the streets as the government hiked petroleum prices during the festive season.
