State set for 12th WebSurfer ICT Conference

KATHMANDU, Jan 24: The 12th WebSurfer ICT Conference 2012 is being organized on Jan 29 and 30 on the sidelines of the Explore Asia CAN Info-Tech. The theme of this year´s conference is ´Internet is for everyone´.



Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) and Internet Society (ISOC) Nepal Chapter are jointly organizing the two-day event.[break]



Speaking at a media briefing in the capital on Tuesday, organizers of the event said all guest speakers had confirmed their participation and that preparation was at the final stage. Babu Ram Aryal, president of ISOC Nepal Chapter, said the event would focus completely on Internet.



“There will be presentations on five categories - infrastructure, Internet content, security, law and policy, and e-enabled services and applications. Each category has paper based on Nepali context,” Aryal added.



The two-day conference is targeting more than 100 participants, including policy makers, government agencies, Internet service providers, telecom operators, academicians, lawyers, ICT students, media persons and others. Registration fee for the conference has been fixed at Rs 4,000 per person.



Suman Lal Pradhan, CEO of WebSurfer - the title sponsor of the event, said the conference would play a key role in formulating necessary policy to expand Internet access in Nepal. He further said that WebSurfer was introducing special Internet package through Wireless DSL during the Info-Tech.



The conference will have two panel discussions on cross-cutting issues that will be webcast live through different portals broadcast live through local television stations.



Dr Subhajit Basu, director of LLM Program at the University of Leeds, UK; Alok Singh, CEO Novatium Solutions; Vinish Kathuria, vice-president of Ericsson India; and Rakshit Tondon, CEO of Tandon Solution Provider, India are the key speakers participating in the conference.



“We hope that the conference will help in development of the Internet and it´s usages in the country,” Aryal said.



Meanwhile, CAN officials have said that preparations for the 18th Explore Asia CAN Info-Tech were at the final stage. CAN President Suresh K Karna said the Info-Tech this year would be unique and that they were trying their best to give visitors a better experience.



The six-day event kicks off at the Bhrikuti Mandap Exhibition Hall on Thursday.
