KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Patriotism is a heavy sounding word whose weight rests differently on different people. It’s an abstract concept for some of us, something that we cannot relate to.

Of course, there are still some amongst us who love this motherland we call home. Yet the answers to “What can we do for our country?” remain vague.[break]

Nripendra Jung Basnet is straightforward. While he thinks he is patriotic, he gives an emphatic no when it comes to doing something. He says, “It is a literal ‘no.’”

This is probably the case with most of us. We do feel affection for our country; the feeling is just not strong enough to drive us to do something.

Neha Manandhar says, “I love my country very much and I’m glad to be a Nepali citizen. We say we can do this and that for our country but all we actually do is declare strikes and curfews which not only hamper the daily lives of the citizens but also the country. So if I have the choice to sacrifice my life for my country, frankly speaking, I would rather escape and save my life rather than sacrificing it for my country. So, in that sense, I’m not very patriotic. This makes me salute all those in the police and armed forces from the bottom of my heart. They sacrifice their lives for the country.”

However, Neha does want to put in an effort. She states, “I can’t do anything big, so my contribution is to stay back in my own country and utilize whatever skills and knowledge I have and be a part of the upliftment of the economic condition in my country. I can do this instead of going abroad and working there to uplift the economic conditions of foreign countries. It is also my dream to see Nepal recognized in every nook and cranny of the world.”

So, instead of shrugging over the big things that we cannot do, let us start with the small ones that we actually can. Each one of us can make a difference.
