SPORTS BRIEFS: YOG team returns home

KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Nepali team returned home after participating in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that concluded in Singapore on Thursday.



Only six among the seven-member team returned to Kathmandu on Friday as Nepal Olympic Committee Treasurer and Chef de Mission of Nepali squad Upendra Keshari Neupane stayed in Bangkok, Thailand. [break]



The team includes three athletes --Tilakram Tharu, Manisha Adhikari, Biswarupa Budha and a taekwondo player Ranjan Shrestha along with athletics coach Hari Bahadur Rokaya and taekwondo coach Deep Raj Gurung.



Tharu was the only member of the Nepali team to secure second round berth. Tharu who made it to the final of 100m race, however, did not participate in the game as Nepali officials were unaware of his feat.





Wilson Academy in QF



KATHMANDU, Aug 27: The junior boys´ team of the hosts Wilson Academy entered the quarterfinals of the Tenth Wilson Inter-school Basketball Tournament (Wilson Hoops) on Friday. Wilson ousted Greenfield 35-10 at the home court in Bafal.



Likewise, Rupy´s International struggled past South Point 19-16 to secure a quarterfinal berth.



In the girls´ category, Sri Diwa thrashed Sunrise 26-6 to advance into the quarterfinals.



Meanwhile in the senior boys´ team, KISC edged out Alpha´s 42-19 to reach the pre-quarterfinals.





Excelsior in last 16



KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Excelsior advanced into the last 16 of the Fifth Valley Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the boys´ category defeating Gyan Niketan 37-32 on Friday. Likewise Innovative edged past Newton 46-37 to set a pre-quarterfinal clash with New Shrine.



In other matches of the boys´ category, Buddha Academy, Mount Glory, Baba Boarding and Daffodil won their respective matches to secure pre-quarterfinal berths. Other teams to secure pre-quarterfinal spots are Babylon, Sky Lark, Rato Bangala, Golden Peak, hosts Valley public ´A´, Prithvi, Nerik, Greenland and Pathshala Nepal.



In the girls´ category, hosts Valley Public ´A´ and ´B´, Golden Peak, Excelsior, Prithvi, HHCA, Clinton, TIA, Mount Glory, Daffodil, Forward, Mahendra Bhawan, Angels´ Heart, Bagmati, Rato Bangala ´A´ and Baba Boarding made it to the pre-quarterfinals.
