SPORTS BRIEFS: Tamang loses semifinal match

KATHMANDU, Dec 27: Nepali boxer Ratna Tamang lost the semifinal match against Uzbekistan´s boxer on Tuesday in the Second Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Boxing Championship being held in Pakistan.



However, Tamang claimed the bronze medal in the 64 kg weight category as he has reached the semifinal after defeating Kenyan opponent in the first bout on Sunday. In the semifinal, Tamang picked injury in the first round and referee had to stop the contest. [break]



Tamang is the only Nepali boxer to win medal in the tournament. Altogether, seven Nepali athletes had participated in the tournament. A 10-member Nepali team, including three officials, was in Pakistan from the first week of December and had attended several training programs.



Lions beat Warriors

KATHMANDU: Ladli Lions defeated Duro Warriors by 117 runs on Tuesday in a group stage match of the Ridhi Sidhi Marwadi T20 Cricket Tournament. Ladli Lions elected to bat and put up 204 runs in 20 overs losing four wickets. Manoj Sood scored 80 runs off 43 balls while Amol Sharma contributed 48 runs off 44 balls. Jayant Agrawal and Ronesh Agrawal took two wickets each.



Chasing the mammoth total, Duro Warriors was all out for 86 runs in 14.5 overs. Pratik Gupta (25 runs off 29 balls) was the highest scorer for warriors. Sumit Sharma and Umesh Kochar took three wickets each. After playing blistering knock, Manoj Sood claimed two wickets and received man-of-the-match award.



Maharjan, Dhami lift U-16 titles


KATHMANDU: Irika Maharjan of Bijeshwari and Kusum Dhami of AVM on Tuesday won the U-16 boys´ and girls´ singles titles respectively in the Cambridge Cup First Valley-wide Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament. Maharjan outclassed her schoolmate Norden Tamang 11-5, 11-6, 11-2 in the final held at the Lainchaur table tennis hall. Dhami defeated Rayojman Thaku of Neologian 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9.



Santu Shrestha claimed the boys´ U-10 singles title with a 11-9, 8-11, 11-5, 11-5 win over Ronit Koirala of Neologian. Dilip Gurung of AVM lifted the U-12 boys´ singles title and Sonu Thapa Magar of Neologian took home the U-14 girls´ singles title. The junior boys´ singles title went to Sirjan Upadhyaya of Elite Co-ed, while Takshashila Rawal claimed the junior girls´ singles title.



National, Nobel win basketball tourney


KATHMANDU: National Campus and Nobel Academy on Tuesday clinched the boys´ and girls´ titles of The Professional 17th Gyan Carnival Inter-college (10+2) Basketball Tournament held at Sanepa, Lalitpur. In the boys´ final, National saw off Trinity 62-43 with 20 points from Kewal Sunuwar. In the girls´ title decider, Nobel outplayed Bernhardt 44-25. Prajan Pokharel of National and Pratibha Chaudhary of Nobel were declared the most valuable players in the boys´ and girls´ sections respectively.



Morgan, Lincoln victorious


KATHMANDU: Morgan, Lincoln, Nobel and Bagmati emerged victorious on Tuesday in the Third BST Cup Inter-college Boys´ Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. Morgan overcame NASA 75-45, Lincoln beat Lumbini 46-30, Nobel thrashed Canvas 62-22 and Bagmati defeated the host BST 70-55.



Host Ideal starts with win


KATHMANDU: Host Ideal made a winning start in the Second Ideal Basketball Tournament that kicked off on Tuesday. Ideal saw off Kantipur 30-26 with 16 points from Saurabh Tamang. Earlier, Purna Lama, the director of Ideal School, inaugurated the tournament. The event has been divided into three categories -- junior boys, senior boys and staff -- with each category featuring eight teams.


NSC to reward Beach SAG medalists

KATHMANDU: National Sports Council (NSC) board meeting on Tuesday decided to award Dhruba Prasad Aryal, who won gold medal in the First South Asian Beach Games in equestrian, with cash. NSC has decided to felicitate the other medalists of the Beach SAG as well. Aryal had won gold in ring and pegging and bronze in tent pegging of equestrian, while Khil Dhwaj Khadka had claimed bronze in ring and pegging event. Likewise, Nepal had won bronze medals in beach football and women´s beach kabaddi.



However, NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama said that the kabaddi team would not get the reward as they had claimed the medal without winning a single match. Meanwhile, NSC sanctioned the concept of organizing National Para Games for differently-abled athletes. Likewise, NSC decided to launch a special training program called ´Extra Tall Sportsperson Training Project´, which will hunt male athletes with a minimum height of 5´10´´ and female athletes at least 5´5´´ and train them in different sports.
