SPORTS BRIEFS: Taekwondo training for journos

KATHMANDU, Sept 18: Nepal Taekwondo Association conducted a training for journalists on Sunday at its training centre in the Dasharath Stadium in coordination with Nepal Sports Journalists Forum (NSJF).



Senior coach and super-class referee Deep Raj Gurung elaborated the rules of the game and the points system to sports journalists present at the training program. [break]



International referee and coach Norbu Lama with the help of national players shed light on the points system and the technical aspects of the game. Nabin Kumar Shrestha, secretary of referee committee, briefed about the points system. Players Dan Bahadur Aire and Rajan Shrestha demonstrated working mechanism of the newly acquired points system, which automatically shows the points on the screen when the chest guard, with sensors, is hit by socks fitted with sensors.



NWA endorses statute


KATHMANDU: Nepal Wushu Association (NWA) has decided to continue with its current working committee after its general assembly was stalled on Saturday. NWA had announced to conduct its first election on Saturday but a direct order from Member Secretary of National Sports Council (NSC) cancelled the election.



NWA has endorsed its statute through majority decision. It has also announced to conduct the election after it gets permission letter from the NSC. The NWA meeting on Saturday also announced to include district whusu associations, for the first time, in the general assembly. The district associations which are actively promoting the game will be included in the next general assembly. The meeting also passed the report of the general secretary and treasurer.



Addressing the press on Sunday, NWA President Aang Dendi Sherpa said that they did not have any groups in the association as claimed by the NSC member Secretary Yubaraj Lama. “We are ready to conduct election whenever NSC asks us.”



GEMS, Prithivi start with wins


KATHMANDU: GEMS and Prithivi started their 18th Eicher Gyan Carnival Girls Basketball Tournament campaigns on a winning note on Sunday. In the curtain raiser, GEMS eased past Malpi 30-8 riding on 16 points of Prakriti Rai. GEMS dominated all four quarters 7-0, 9-2, 6-4, 8-2 for a comprehensive victory. Similarly, Prithivi stunned the host Gyanodaya 30-22. Shakuntala Lama scored 11 points for the winning side. Prithivi took the first, second and fourth quarters 9-7, 6-1, 12-5 respectively. Gyanodaya took the third quarter by six points with a score of 9-6. Under boys´ section, Malpi and Gyanodaya received walkovers from Rato Bangala and Budhanilkantha School respectively. Altogether 12 teams each are participating in boys´ and girls´ categories.



Ideal Model, LRI triumph


KATHMANDU: Ideal Model, LRI, TIA and Teresa on Sunday won their respective matches under senior boys´ section in the first The Excelsior Cup Basketball Tournament at the Excelsior court in Swayambhu. Ideal Model saw off Buddha Academy 38-25, while LRI beat New Arunodaya 29-12 with 14 points from Nikesh Rai. Similarly, TIA downed Oasis 34-21 riding on 16 points of Avishek Gurung, while Teresa had a narrow 52-49 win over The Skylark. Rabi Khadka netted 17 points for Teresa. In junior boys´ category, The Excelsior thrashed Baba 30-10 with 16 points from Kumar Gurung. Mouth Glory hammered Panchayan 26-9 with 17 points from Dipesh Lama. In junior boys´ five-a-side football, APF School beat Chandbagh 2-0. Pradip Shrestha and Prajwal Bista scored a goal each for APF. Similarly, St Xavier´s registered a 2-1 win over The Excelsior. Sarthak Khadka netted both the goals for St Xavier´s, while Ashwin Dhungana scored the lone goal for The Excelsior.
