SPORTS BRIEFS: Study team formed for National Games

KATHMANDU, Sept 9: A-five member venue study and research team has been formed for the Sixth National Games to be held at Dhangadi of the Far-western Region.



The team has been formed under the coordination of National Sports Council (NSC) member Khadga Bahadur Ranabhat. [break]Chief of the administration department Kul Bahaudur Thapa, senior coach Keshav Gautam, ceremony chief Sudhir Pokharel and taekwondo ace Deepak Bista are the members of the team. The team will inspect the physical infrastructure for conducting the games and submit a report with estimated cost.


Magar wins three gold medals



Bishal Magar of New Buddha Prakash won triple gold under boys´ section on Thursday in the Eighth Inter-school Wushu Championship at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall. He had won gold in thaulo tai chi chuan on Wednesday.



Magar won gold medals in nan dao, nan gun and nan quan. He scored 7.27 in nan dao, 7.07 in nan gun and 7.38 points in nan quan. Likewise, Ashok Budhamagar of Jalajala with 6.60 and Ukesh Tamang of Demos with 6.05 points secured second and third positions in nan dao. Budhamagar and Tamang finished second and third in nan gun as well. In nan quan Tamang bagged silver while Budhamagar secured bronze.



In boys´ tai chi jian Prithivi Pakhrin of New Buddha Prakash secured gold while Shiva Maharjan and Buddhiman Maharjan of Jaljala finished second and third respectively.

In boys´ tai san lu Milan Pun of Universal, Sudesh Maharjan of Jaljala and Awan Rai of New Buddha Prakash booked top three spots. In girls´ same event, Smriti Manandhar and Sriya Shrestha of Rosebud and Yunisa Thapaliya of Jaljala secured top three positions respectively.



In boys´ taishu, Bishwa Budhamagar of Jaljala, Rinji Sherpa and Bijay Magar of New Buddha secured top three positions. In gunshu, Rinji Sherpa of New Buddha Dorji Lama of RMS and Bijay Magar of RMS took top three positions.


Hosts, Neric in quarterfinals



The hosts Awareness International Academy and Neric advanced into junior boys quarterfinals on Thursday in the First AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament held at hosts court Sankhamul. AIA beat Rosebud 36-29 and Neric defeated Valley Public 24-20. Likewise, New Shrine eased past Gyan Niketan 33-12, Innovative ousted Angels´ Heart 30-12, Golden Peak saw off Kathmandu English School 24-14, and Daffodil defeated Greenland 28-12.


Inter-school judo from Sept 16



Triyog Higher Secondary School has decied to organize Inter-school Judo Championship on September 16 and 17. School. Organizing a press meet on Thursday, the school informed that 300 students from 16 schools are participating in the tournament. Nepal Judo Association has given technical support for the tournament, which includes eight events in boys´ category and seven events in girls´ section. School Principal Indu Gandhi said the tournament will be held next year as well.


GM Chess kicks off



Former Nepal champion Punyaman Karmacharya and Prachandaman Malakar made an impressive start in the Himalayan Grand Master International Chess Tournament that kicked off Thursday in the capital.



Karmacharya rated 2030 stunned Indian International Master (IM) C Praveen Kumar rated 2380 while Malakar rated 1959 defeated India´s FIDE Master (FM) Saurav Khedekar rated 2345.



Harichandra Chaulagain of Nepal accumulated full points after he did not get an opponent in the draw for the tournament comprising of 43 players. Among 20 Nepali participants, four including Lawa Kumar Shrestha, Balaram Napit, Uttamraj Thapa and Nirajan Prajapati shared points playing draws.



Shrestha played a draw with French Woman Grand Master (WGM) Nino Maisuradze while Napit shared points with FM Shakil Abu Sufian of Bangladesh. Similarly, Thapa held IM Saptarshi Roy of India and Prajapati played a draw with Bangladeshi FM Javed Mohammad.



The only FM of Nepal Manish Hamal received an early blow from Indian IM MR Venkatesh. Among six GMs, the highest profile chess players, all players other than French WGM Maisuradze secured full points with victories.
