SPORTS BRIEFS: NGA to start Asian Games preparation

KATHMANDU, June 13: The Second Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Nepal Golf Association (NGA) has decided to begin preparation for Asian Games 2014 and 2018 by the end of this year.



The AGM endorsed the proposal of selecting potential players within December this year to prepare for the Asian Games.[break]



 The AGM also decided to establish golf academies in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Dharan for developing young golfers. Meanwhile, NGA announced to organize an international standard Nepal Amateur Golf Championship this year to promote Nepal Tourism Year 2011 with a concept of making Nepal a golf tourism destination.



Likewise, the AGM held at Royal Nepal Golf Club decided to organize National Amateur Championship and National Junior Amateur Championship every year apart from several domestic 54-hole Amateur Golf Championships. The AGM also nominated former Chief of Nepal Army Pyara Jung Thapa and Nagendra Pampati, the chairman of International Institute of Medical Science as the advisors of the association.



Inter-school TT from Tuesday


KATHMANDU: The Fourth Gautam Buddha Memorial Inter-school Table Tennis Tournament is all set to kick off in the capital on Tuesday. Altogether 350 players from 40 schools are participating in the tournament organized by National Table Tennis Training Center, Lainchaur.


Saipal, Columbus in semis


KATHMANDU: Saipal and host Columbus entered into the semifinals of the First Columbus Cup Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Monday. Saipal edged past The Times 74-65 as Prajoon Pokharel scored 25 points. Likewise, Columbus defeated EPS 78-68 to book a semifinal berth with Hari Jang Thapa alone netting 38 points for the winner.



12 Nepalis awarded fourth Dan


KATHMANDU: English ITF President and Grand Master Paul Cutler awarded the fourth Dan ranking to 12 Nepalis and four foreign taekwondo coaches in Nepal on Monday. As per the annual program of Nepal International Taekwondo Federation, Cutler awarded the fourth Dan ranking to Nepali coaches Anjan Dhamala, Nanda Kishor Barma, Raj Mandir Shrestha, Bishwa Shrestha, Suraj Thapa, Prabin Kumar Karki, Umesh Rajthala, Shanti Tamang, Sneha Nepali, Anju Raut, Fatima and Gopal Shrestha.



Sahid Shukra, SVI win


KATHMANDU: Sahid Shukra Higher Secondary School, Siddhartha Vanasthali, Gyanodaya Bal Batika and New Summit registered victory in the ongoing Coca Cola Inter-school Boys’ and Girls’ National Football Tournament on Monday. In the matches played at ANFA complex, Satdobato, Sahid Shukra defeated The Nams School 5-4 in tie breaker. In the second match, Siddhartha Vanasthali secured a 3-0 victory over Tej Binayak School. In the third match, Gyanodaya defeated Shining Star 3-0. New Summit edged pasted Man Singh Dharma School 4-3 in sudden death.
