SPORTS BRIEFS: Joshi, Maharjan selected for World Taekwondo Championship

KATHMANDU, April 10: Sujan Joshi and Ashish Maharjan have qualified to compete in the 20th World Taekwondo Championship from Nepal.



The championship is scheduled to be held in South Korea from May 1 to 7. [break]



Joshi and Maharjan were judged best players to represent Nepal in the championship through a selection tournament conducted at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall on Sunday. The selection was conducted in four different categories.



Armed Police Force personnel Joshi won the Bentam Weight (63kg) category final. He defeated Nischal Man Shrestha of Nepal Police Club (NPC) 4-3. In feather weight (68kg), Maharjan who fought Anuj Pujari of NPC was declared winner with super rating from the panel of judges after the match was tied to 6 points each.



Rajan Shrestha and Surendra Khadgi also won their respective qualifying matches in the fly and fin weight categories but failed to make it for the championship as Nepal Taekwondo association selects only best two out of the four winners.



RCT set up final clash against Himalayan Sherpa


HETAUDA: Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) set up a final clash against Himalayan Sherpa Club in the ongoing Second National Workers Cup Football Tournament in Hetauda. RCT came from behind to beat New Road Team (NRT) 2-1 in the second semifinal of the tournament on Sunday. Bishnu KC scored in the 15th minute of the match but Antello Agemoru leveled the score in the 23rd minute. Shekhar Limbu sealed the competitive match for RCT in the 85th minute. The winners of the tournament will receive Rs 200,000 while the runners-up will bag Rs 100,000.


Gurung to compete in cross-continental


POKHARA: Shambhu Gurung of Pokhara is all set to compete in a unique swimming competition. The 44-year-old tourism entrepreneur will participate in the Turkey Cross-continental Swimming Tournament to he held in Bosporus Strait, which links two continents -- Asian and Europe.



Gurung will also become the first Nepali national to compete in the event to be held on July 17. Gurung will employ freestyle and breast stroke to cross a distance of 6.5 km. About 700 swimmers from more than three dozen countries are expected to participate in the event.



Gurung said that he was competing in the event for the promotion of Nepal Tourism Year 2011. “I am competing in such a challenging event to promote Nepal Tourism Year 2011,” Gurung said on Sunday at a press conference.



The swimming will begin from Russia and finish in Istanbul of Turkey.
