Lalitpur´s Rajan Joshi had already secured a place in the men´s above 100 kg category for the Asiad in the first round selection. Joshi was unanimously selected because there were no opponents in his weight category. Joshi is also a SAG bronze medalist.
Likewise, Sushila Adhikari of Nepal Police was selected in the women´s U-52 kg category. Adhikari edged out 11th SAG bronze medalist and her clubmate Radha Devi Rai to secure a berth for the Asiad.
In the women´s U-63 kg category, Ranju Rai of Parsa was selected for the Asiad. Rai got an easy ticket as her opponent, 11th SAG bronze medalist Debu Thapa withdrew her name from the selection.
Thapa said she pulled out as she has to leave for the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
The 16th Asian Games will be held from November 12 to 27 in Guangzhou, China.
Taekwondo team off to Korea
A four-member Nepali taekwondo team left for Korea on Tuesday to participate in the Sixth International Korea Open Taekwondo Championships. The team comprises three women players and an official.
The three players participating in the event are the ones selected for the 16th Asian Games. Yan Kumari Chaulagain was selected in women´s U-46 kg category, Ayasha Shakya in women´s U-53 kg and Manita Shahi in women´s U-62 kg.
Nepal´s Korean coach Quan Young Dal is also in the team. The tournament will be held from September 2-6 in Korea´s Gumi.
Karatekas to get cash prize if they win in Asiad
KATHMANDU, Aug 31: Balaju Karate Do Academy announced on Tuesday to provide cash prizes to its players if they win medals in the 16th Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou, China in November.
The academy will award Rs 200,000 to gold medalists, Rs 100,000 to silver medalists and Rs 50,000 to bronze medalists.
South Asian Games medalists Sunil Lama and Anu Adhikari along with Roji Nagarkoti, Laxmi Bhatta, Mallika Thapa and Kalpana Basnet of the academy are preparing for the Asiad after passing the second round selection. The final selection will be held on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the academy also felicitated the medalists of the International Karate Championships 2010 held in Jaipur, India a week ago. All 16 participants of the academy won medals in Jaipur, which includes six golds, four silvers and six bronzes.
The gold medalists are Ravi Chhetri, Tek Bahadur Shrestha, Sujan Thapa, Upendra Sharma, Anupama Magar and Niru Rana.
