SPORTS BRIEFS: Daffodil, White Field in semis

KATHMANDU, Feb 22: Host Daffodil and White Field School on Friday advanced into the semifinals of junior boys´ football in the Daffodil Cup Inter-school Football and Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. The Excelsior School and Kathmandu Valley have already reached the semifinals. Daffodil edged past Galaxy School 3-2. Anil Mainali, Bikram Oli and Mingma Lama were on target for Daffodil while Tylor Adhikari and Paras Bohara scored a goal each for Galaxy. In another match, White Field thumped Young Hearts 6-2. Phursang netted four goals and Leepon scored a brace for the winning side.



Golden Peak defeated TIA 61-49 to secure a berth in the semifinals of senior boys´ basketball. Anish Magar netted the highest 21 points for Golden Peak. In the senior girls´ category, Valley Public and Daffodil joined NIMs and Pennwood in the semifinals. Valley Public defeated Mount Kailash 21-10 and Daffodil saw off Baba Boarding School 29-19. Simbali Godal contributed the highest eight points for Valley Public while Frezilla Tamang scored nine points for Daffodil.[break]



Financial support to boxers´ families



KATHMANDU
: Nepal Boxing Association (NBA) provided financial support of Rs 50,000 each to the families of two former boxers amidst a function in the capital on Friday.



NBA had collected the amount from Nepali boxers residing in Macau for the treatment of former boxer Kishor Thapa, who suffers from high bold pressure, and for the family of late boxer Surya Rana Magar. Ashika, the daughter of boxer Thapa and Sita, the wife of late boxer Rana Magar received the amount on behalf of their families.

Meanwhile, additional Rs 25,000 was given to Sita by Chief of Army Staff Gaurab Shumsher Rana. Rana Magar was a Nepal Army player. Major Sagar Shumsher Thapa gave away the amount to Sita.



Boxer Thapa won silver medal in the South Asia Games (SAG) and also participated in the Asian Games. Earlier also, NBA had provided Rs 50,000 for Thapa´s treatment.



Similarly, Rana Magar was a bronze medalist in SAG. He died three years ago.



Gurung leads CMS Cup



KATHMANDU
: Prem Gurung took the lead in the CMS Cup Amateur Golf Tournament on Friday as 29 amateur golfers teed off on the first day of the tournament. Gurung, who plays with 14 handicaps, scored total 39 points to take the lead in the tournament being played at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC). Tendi Sherpa is in the second position with 37 points while HR Gurung is third with 34 points. More than 60 golfers are expected to tee off on Saturday. The amateur competition of CMS Cup is being played in stableford format with ¾ handicap allowances. Veteran pro Deepak Thapa Magar won the professional competition of CMS Cup on Thursday after completing three rounds of the tournament with a total score of two-under 199 at the par-67 RNGC course.
