SPORTS BRIEFS: Chhantyal moves to top

KATHMANDU, Dec 27: Govinda Chhantyal, Norbu Gurung and Ram Prasad Gauchan gave best performances of the day in the First Open Tara Running-shield Archery Championship on Monday.



Chhantyal and Gurung added three points each in the points tally on Monday while Gauchan added two points in his kitty. [break]



With the best performance of the Day IV, Chhantyal leveled his score with Kamal Gurung at the top of points tally of the tournament. They both have seven points each on the top. Norbu Gurung is overall second with six points. Namobuddha Gurung Sewa Samiti of Sukedhara, Kathmandu, is the organizer of the tournament.


APF, Far Western on winning streaks



Nepal APF Club and Far Western Cricket Development Club continued their winning streaks in the ongoing Madan Bhandari Memorial T-20 Cricket Tournament with their second consecutive victories on Monday.



APF, studded with national cricket stars, thrashed New Vision Club by 102 runs. Batting first, APF were all out for 170 runs in 18.5 overs. Despite a 69-run opening stand by Paresh Lohani (35 runs) and Subash Khakurel (25 runs), other stars of APF except Gyanendra Malla (52 runs) failed to score big. Sovit Dhoj Chand took four wickets for New Vision while Ram Chaudhary and Simon Thapa claimed three wickets each. In reply, Mehboob Alam took four wickets and Prithu Baskota claimed two as New Vision were bowled out for 68 runs at the completion of the allotted 20 overs.



Likewise, Far Western pulled off an emphatic 10-wicket victory over Kantipur City College (KCC). KCC made 74/8 in 20 overs after Bhuwan Karki claimed four wickets for Far Western. In reply, Far Western met the target in 7.4 overs without losing any wicket. Naresh Budhayer struck 39 runs while Shakti Bhandari scored 32 runs.



Sahukhala scores twice as MMC triumph



Santosh Sahukhala netted twice for Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) on Monday as they beat Samsung Jawalakhel Youth Club 2-0 in the Adarsh Cup Football Tournament in Lekhnath, Pokhara to enter the semifinal. After playing a goalless first half, Sahukhala put MMC ahead in the 63rd minute through a spotkick and added another one two minutes later to seal his team´s victory. Sahukhala succeeded to score a spotkick in the third attempt after failing to score in the final and semifinal of the British Gurkha Cup Football Tournament that concluded in the capital on Saturday. MMC will meet the winners between Armed Police Force and Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) in the final.



NCA ex-vice prez dies



Former vice president of Nepal Chess Association Arun Shrestha passed away on Monday at Kakarvita, Jhapa. Shrestha was actively involved in the development of chess in Nepal. Shrestha, who was elected vice-president of NCA unanimously during the first general assembly, died in a car accident at Mechinagar-10, Ittabhatta. NCA has expressed grief on untimely demise of Shrestha.
