At a press conference organized here on Monday, the association said 13 countries including Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Kuwait, Bahrain, Honk Kong, Iran, Japan and South Korea will participate in the tournament to be organized under the technical support of Asian Squash Federation.
Before that, NSRA will host WISPA Championship that consist of 16 professional women squash players from November 10-14, 2010. The tournament will carry a total cash prize of US $5,000.
Meanwhile, the assocuiation also felicitated Nepali players who participated and won medals in the First Asian Masters Squash Championship. Suresh Gurung had won a silver while Hira Bahadur Thapa and Manoj Shrestha had won a bronze each in the tournament held from July 6-10 earlier this month. Bhusan Shrestha and Kiran Shrestha hd participated in the event. They were awarded with certificates by National Sports Council Member-Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary.
Taekwondo selection for Asiad begins
The preliminary stage of taekwondo qualifying matches for 16th Asian Games to be held in Guangzhou, China, began on Monday at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium.
In men´s U-54 kg category, Rajendra Shahi of Parsa, Arun Adhikari of Chitwan, Jeevan Bhujel and Chandra Rana Magar of Lalitpur, Manish Tamrakar of Rupandehai, Rajesh Malla of Nawalparasi, Surendra Khadgi of Nepal Police and Pushpa Thapa Magar of Armed Police Force advanced into the quarterfinals.
In U-58 kg category, Yam Bahadur Pun of Nepal Police, Shyam Joshi and Surya Pariyar of APF, Haribansa Balami of Lalitpur, Gangaram Gista of Nepal Army, Mohammad Bess of Parsa, Niroj Shrestha of Bhaktapur and Surendra Chaudhary of Chitwan made it to the quarterfinals.
Altogether, 48 players will be picked in the initial stage -- four each from 12 weight categories. Equal six categories are included in both men´s and women´s section. A total of 115 men and 45 women players are contesting in the two-day selection tournament.
The medal winner of the 11th South Asian Games will get a direct entry into the second round.
Taekwondo coaches off to South Korea
A six-member team of taekwondo coaches left for Seoul, South Korea, on Monday to participate in the 20th Foreign Instructor Training Course to be held from July 20-24. The training is being organized by Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Academy. Min Thapa, Sriman Thapa Magar, Tonil Karmacharya, Hari Prasad Pandey, Rabin Joshi and Kabiraj Khadgi are the coaches to participate in the training. Nepal Taekwondo Association Vice President Kalyan Kumar Timilsina bade farewell to the team on Monday.
24 teams to contest in nat´l basketball
Altogether 24 teams will participate in the Morgan Cup Eighth Women´s and Ninth Men´s National Basketball Tournament to begin from Wednesday. According to the organizer Nepal Basketball Association, 18 teams in men´s and six teams in women´s category will participate in the event. Men´s teams are divided into four groups. Top two teams from each group will make it to the quarterfinals. The women´s teams are divided into two groups with three teams in each group. Top two teams from each group will advance into the semifinals.
LA, Birendra Sainik top groups
Little Angels and Birendra Sainik schools topped Group C and D of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Boys National Football Tournament by winning their respective matches on Monday. In the matches played at Sano Gaucharan grounds, Little Angels beat Mahendra Bhrikuti and Birendra Sainik beat Kailash Bodi with identical 1-0 score. The winners will meet on Monday for the final selection. In other matches at Chyasal grounds, Siddhartha Vanasthali, Read Model and Gyanodaya Bal Batika emerged victorious.
