KATHMANDU, Dec 10: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) unanimously approved Anup Raj Sharma’s recommendation for the post of Chief Justice on Thursday.

The PHSC queried Sharma about his future strategies especially regarding transparency, corruption and delay in justice process for over an hour before approving him.[break]

The Constitutional Council has recommended Sharma as the successor of incumbent Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, who is retiring on December 12. Sharma is the senior most justice at the Supreme Court.

The lawyer-turned judge has the reputation of passing bold verdicts, especially during the King´s direct rule, and holds a clean image. He will be the first Nepali lawyer to assume the top judicial post.

Though former Chief Justice Hari Prasad Pradhan was also a lawyer, he was an Indian national. Sharma joined the Supreme Court on January 5, 2004 as a permanent judge.
