KATHMANDU, Sep 2: The Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC) held on Sunday unanimously approved the proposal by General Secretary Gagan Thapa to contest elections without forging an alliance.

The final day CWC meeting of the NC, which began on August 7 and was adjourned several times due to disagreements by NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his close allies, approved Thapa’s proposal yesterday.

“We will revitalize our own organization, increase public support and trust, and re-establish the NC as a party capable of securing a majority on its own,” the decision asserts.

However, the proposal was approved in a roundabout manner, replacing the word “alliance” with the phrase “the NC will contest future periodic elections on its own strength.”

Thapa had made this proposal during the Mahasamiti meeting held from February 19 to 22 in Godawari, Lalitpur. Then, the Mahasamiti meeting endorsed the proposal and forwarded it to the CWC for further discussion and a final decision.

The party was experiencing heated debates due to the proposals made by General Secretary Thapa. Following the decision, the debate within the NC has been settled for the time being.
