Shaila sets national record

KATHMANDU, Sept 6: Shailesh Rana and his sister Shaila completed the First NSA Open and Age Group Swimming Championship on a high note winning 17 golds between themselves. Shaila, who won three gold medals on Sunday, clinched five more on Monday while Shailesh grabbed four more on day two to take his gold tally to nine.



Shaila set a new national record in women´s 50 m backstroke. She covered the distance in 36.20 seconds to break the previous record of 37.29 seconds, also set by her. [break]



Likewise, she clocked 1 minute 11.91 seconds to win women´s 100 m freestyle, where Oshin Bharatee took 1 minute 18.22 seconds. She once again remained ahead of Bharatee in 50 m breaststroke. Rana clocked 41.84 seconds while Bharatee´s timing was 43.94 seconds.



Rana also won 50 m butterfly with a timing of 35.15 seconds and 50 m freestyle in 32.44 seconds. Bharatee stood second in both events as Rana won the gold medals on Monday.



Meanwhile, Shailesh won gold medals in men´s 100 m freestyle, 50 m breaststroke, 50 m freestyle and 50 m butterfly clocking 1 minute 1.47 seconds, 33.47 seconds, 27.25 seconds and 29.88 seconds respectively.



Pushpa Raj Shahi clinched gold in men´s 50 m backstroke.







Shreya Dhital bagged three more gold medals in different events of the girls´ age group on Monday while Prakash Adhikari, Shirish Gurung, Anjalee Syangbo and Jayant Gurung won two gold medals each in age group events. Shirish was awarded a mountain bike as he was adjudged the rising swimmer of the tournament.



Little Angels´ School won the team championship in the age group. LA scored 103 points to top the championship tally, whereas Kathmandu Information Study Center (KISC) gathered 55 points for the second spot. Baba Boarding finished third with 51 points.







Nepal Army´s swimmer Kisim Lal Tharu was awarded a motorcycle by Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) during the concluding ceremony. According to NSA, it will reward a swimmer with a 10-year-long career every year with a motorbike evaluating their performance and discipline.
