KATHMANDU, Jan 13: Departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC)’s Dinesh Shrestha on Friday set a new national record breaking a nearly two-decade-long national record in the ongoing 23rd Men’s and eighth Women’s National Weight-Lifting Championship under the National Sports Council (NSC) Championship in Pokhara.
In 105 kg weight group of snatch category, he broke the record of Bhadan Shiva Shakti in the eighth South Asian Games (SAG) of 120 kg. Shrestha lifted 121 kg on Friday to break the record.
Nepal Police Club (NPC)’s Sandesh Gurung won the silver medal in snatch lifting 100 kg, while Bara’s Mahammad Aashik Hussain won the bronze lifting 88 kg.

Shrestha also won the gold medal in total including clean and jerk. He lifted a total of 261 kg including 140 kg in clean and jerk. Likewise, Gurung lifted a total of 232 kg including 132 in clean and jerk. Also, Hussain lifted a total of 193 kg including 105 kg in the same category.
Pukar Gurung of TAC improved his previous record by winning gold and lifted a weight-group of 105 kg. He improved his record of 124 kg that he had set in the seventh National Games, lifting 125 kg this time. NPC’s Rajeev Maharjan won the silver medal lifting 95 kg, while Subhash Upadhyaya of Kanchanpur bagged the bronze lifting 87 kg in snatch.
Gurung also claimed the gold medal in clean and jerk lifting a total of 265 kg including 140 kg, while Upadhyaya won the silver lifting 120 kg and Maharjan bagged the bronze lifting 118 kg. Maharjan and Upadhyaya won silver and bronze medals lifting 113 kg and 107 kg respectively.
In the 85 kg weight group, TAC’s Surendra Shrestha won gold medals lifting a total of 232 kg including 105 kg in snatch and 127 kg in clean and jerk. NPC’s Gagan Chanda won the silver lifting a total of 210 kg including 93 kg in snatch and 117 kg in clean and jerk, while Bishal Singh Bista of Kanchanpur bagged bronze medal lifting a total of 200 kg including 85 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk.
In the 94 kg weight group, Tahal Bahadur Basel of TAC bagged the gold lifting a total of 217 kg including 127 in clean and jerk. He had to satisfy for the silver medal in snatch as he lifted only 90 kg. NPC’s Shree Krishna Maharjan claimed the gold medal in snatch by lifting 100 kg. Maharjan, who had lifted a total of 210 kg including 110 kg in clean and jerk, won the silver medal, while Bhaktapur’s Jayadi Koju bagged the bronze by lifting a total of 191 kg including 81 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk.
TAC’s Kamal Bahadur Adhikari won the strongest lifter and the best lifter awards in men’s category of the tournament. Likewise, NPC’s Tara Devi Pun also won the strongest lifter, while TAC’s Sanju Chaudhary was rewarded with the best lifter award. The winning players were prized with Rs 5,000 each. The players who set the national records were also given cash prize of Rs 5,000 each. A total of seven national records were created in the tournament.
A total of three departmental teams and 24 women and 59 men players from 14 districts took part in the tournament.
