Shaila Rana sets national record in swimming

KATHMANDU, Sept 9: Shaila Rana set a new national record in the 100 meters backstrokes in the final day of the 15th National Open and Age Group Swimming Championship on Wednesday. [break]



Shaila beat the national record set by swimming sensation Karishma Karki during Fifth National Games in April 2009 completing the distance in 1min 22.11 seconds against 1 min 22.20 seconds set by Karishma. Karishma finished second in the event, while Shreya Dhital finished third. Shaila took her gold tally to 7 after clinching gold medals in 100 meters freestyle, 200 meters individual medley, 50 meters butterfly and 50 meters backstrokes.







In men´s open category, Sailesh Rana finished with 6 golds. Rana, who won three golds with a national record on Tuesday, added three more gold medals in his kitty. Rana won 100 meters butterfly (1 min 10.47 seconds), 100 meters breaststrokes (1 min 13.68 seconds) and 100 meters freestyle (1 min 10.47 seconds).



Likewise, Pushparaj Shahi took gold medal in 50 meters backstrokes with the timing of 33.66 seconds. Olympian Prasiddha Jung Shahi took gold medal in 50 meters freestyle with the timing of 27.18 seconds. Altogether 320 swimmers, 75 in open and 245 in age group, participated in the two-day championship.
