GHORAHI, Dec 15: This year´s Madan Puraskar-winning novel Seto Dharti is all set to remove the word "Gharti" from its upcoming edition. The word had infuriated the members of Gharti community who claimed that it portrayed the community in a derogative way.

According to the writer Amar Neupane, the word Gharti would be removed from the upcoming third edition of the book. [break]

Speaking with the readers on Saturday in Dang, Neupane said, “We have already decided to drop out the word, which has drawn concerns of some communities, from the upcoming edition. It will make no difference to the novel.” The writer also insisted that he had not used the word in any otherwise sense.

“The word was not used in a sense that would humiliate the community. Rather, the use in my book has further strengthened their past history,” Neupane added.

The novel, which deals with the chi marriage and hard life of the child widow in the past, portrays the Gharti caste as palanquin carriers.

Gharti is one of the surnames of Bhujel community. Novelist Neupane further shared his experience with the readers regarding the creation of the Seto Dharti.
