BUTWAL, July 20: It has been learnt that a majority of vehicles with fake number plates seized by the police in Butwal over the year belong to Maoist leaders, activists and businessmen close to the party.

Area Police Office, Butwal and Regional Traffic Police Office, which traced the owners of the seized cars and motorcycles, during a joint investigation said the number plates of most vehicles have been changed or without bill books. While six cars and six motorbikes were seized by the area police, 15 cars and 19 bikes are under Regional Traffic Police. [break]

Police sources have also said that four vehicles belong to Maoist cantonments. One Hyundai car number Ba 0001 Aa 27 seized from Butwal was claimed by Maoist combatant Nanda Kishor Pun. But police revealed that it belonged to a different owner.

The then Maoist government had made temporary arrangement to provide different number plates to 100 cars for a year. Earlier, the Maoist leaders and cadres were using fake number plates. But the registration of the cars has neither been renewed nor has there been any decision to scrap the registration of the vehicles.

A dozen cars is said to be running under the number of Ba 0001 Aa 10. Also many Maoists are found to be changing number plates every week.
