KATHMANDU, Nov 21: A high-level delegation from the Security Council Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict arrived in Kathmandu for a six-day visit on Sunday to assess the progress made and challenges facing the task of protecting conflict-hit children, particularly the disqualified Maoist combatants discharged early this year.

The delegation led by Claude Heller, who heads the Security Council Working Group on children and armed conflict, will study whether the action plan for prevention of recruitment and release of verified minors from the Maoist army and their rehabilitation has been fully implemented. [break]

The team will stay in Kathmandu till November 21.

The government, UCPN (Maoists) and the United Nations had singed a tripartite agreement on December 16 last year to discharge disqualified Maoist combatants, including minors.

The agreement had paved way for the release late recruits and minors.

The delegation will meet senior government officials, political parties, youth organizations, civil society representatives and the United Nations officials, according to a media alert from UNMIN.

The delegation will also meet Maoist leadership.
