CHITWAN, Oct 20: A total of 246 people receiving treatment at various hospitals in the district have tested positive for scrub typhus infection. The cases were confirmed out of 4,108 individuals who sought medical care at local health facilities.
Ram KC, the kit controller at the Chitwan Public Health Office, said that 181 of the infected individuals are residents of Chitwan, while 65 are from outside the district.
Take effective measures to stop the spread of scrub typhus
Of the total cases, 25 have been reported in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. Khairahani Municipality has recorded 43 cases, Madi Municipality 4, Ratnanagar Municipality 61, Rapti Municipality 20, Kalika Municipality 23, and Ichhakamana Rural Municipality 5.
Scrub typhus is transmitted to humans through bites from infected mites that live on the ears of mice or other animals. Common symptoms include high fever, red eyes, cough, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, severe headaches, joint and muscle pain, rashes, and occasionally black scab-like lesions at the bite site.
To reduce the risk of infection, KC advised wearing long-sleeved clothing and proper footwear when entering fields, shrubs, or forested areas, applying insect repellent on exposed skin, trimming grass around home gardens, maintaining cleanliness, and storing grains properly to keep away mice.
