Her suicide note reads: “I am not guilty of anything and my mother doesn’t have to prove this to anyone”

KATHMANDU, Dec 16:  On December 7, Sadikshya and her mother visited her school Viswa Niketan Secondary School in Tripureshwor after the Discipline In-Charge (DI) of the school invited them. The reason DI Nawaraj Lohani cited was to inquire about Sadikshya's absence in the school for 15 days.

At school, Sadikshya, a teenager studying at Grade XI, explained to DI Lohani that she had been to her home village in Saptari during the parliamentary and provincial assembly elections held on November 20. Their stay in Saptari was extended as she wanted to get her citizenship certificate from the District Administration Office, Saptari.

Her mother, who accompanied Sadikshya, also told DI Lohani that they had indeed visited their home district.  They arrived in Kathmandu a few days after the November 20 election. But Sadikshya could not go to her school for the next few days due to illness, making her absent in the school for 15 days after the election holidays were over.

DI Lohani would not believe them despite their efforts to convince him. He insisted that Sadikshya had deliberately bunked the class and started inquiring who she had spent the time with. He even alleged that she was visiting different places with her boyfriend — something Sadiskya and her mother denied during the meeting. Sadikshya, who had her terminal examination beginning the next day, was even threatened that she would not be allowed to sit for the examination until she provided a ‘convincing’ explanation behind her absence.

The 16-year old Sadiksya, who felt that her character was assassinated, was upset by the rude behavior of the DI. As they returned to their rented apartment in Sanepa after their meeting with the DI, she did not even talk to her mother. She would usually take almost half an hour to finish her lunch. But on that particular day she finished eating her lunch in a few minutes and then went straight to her room as her mother remained busy with the household chores.

After she completed her household chores, her mother went to her room to check if she was okay. It was around 10 AM. But when she entered the room, she could not believe her eyes. Sadikshya had already committed suicide, leaving behind a note. The note, according to her elder sister Shristi, read: “I am innocent and I haven’t done anything that I should be ashamed of. Nor does my mother need to prove my innocence to anybody. I love you so much Mom, I love you so much Didi!”

Shristi claims that Sadikshya committed suicide due to the mental torture meted out to her by the DI of her school. “Sadikshya had gone to Saptari with her family during the parliamentary and provincial assembly elections held on November 20. Her stay in Saptari was extended as she had to acquire her citizenship certificate. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, she was taken ill due to which she was unable to attend school for 15 days after the election was over,” she said.

According to the victim’s family, the school DI called Sadikshya along with her mother to the school on December 7 and threatened to rusticate her from the school. He had asked the victim to pay Rs 15,000 in fine for her absence from school for  15 days. This Sadikshya had not communicated to her family earlier. “Lohani passed statements that sought to assassinate her character in front of her own mother. This was too cruel for a 16-year-old to tolerate,” she added.

Shristi claims that Lohani accused the victim of staying out with a male friend and lying about it to her parents. He forced the victim to reveal where she had been for the past 15 days bunking classes. When her mother said that she was with her family during elections and got sick right after, DI Lohani threatened them saying that they hadn’t seen the power of his signature and that Sadikshya would not be allowed to appear in her exams the following day unless she provided a proof of where she had been to all those days. Lohani tried to shut them down by abusing his authority and passed ill comments on the innocent.

Family members of the victim claim that the false allegations made by the DI incited Sadikshya to take her own life. “The rude behavior of the DI took an innocent life. We want to make sure that this does not happen to others. We will fight for justice to Sadikshya till the end,” said Shristi, adding that they had launched street protests after the police administration did not show any interest in investigating the case.

Sadikshya’s friends in the school and her family members maintain that the insensitive behavior and remarks of the DI were solely to be blamed for the tragic incident. The agitating students argue that the school had failed to maintain a student-friendly environment by conceptualizing the basic psychological needs of the students to promote their personal growth and well-being.

The agitating students of Viswa Niketan School and Sadikshya’s family members and neighbors have started taking to the streets to ensure justice to Sadikshya. They have been regularly staging protests in Maitighar Mandala and on the school premises demanding justice for Sadikshya.

Following the protests, the school administration has suspended DI Lohani and police have launched an investigation into the incident. “We are staging a protest to get justice for Sadikshya through Lohani’s arrest so that someone else’s daughters or sisters do not have to go through the same situation,” said Manish Jaiswal, a neighbor of Sadiksya’s family. “We will continue our protests till Sadikshya gets justice.”
