Scenic Shailung awaits visitors

DOLAKHA, Jan 13: Shailung in Dolakha district is one of the attractive destinations in the country to visit during Visit Nepal Year (VNY) 2020.

This attractive destination, which is home to over a hundred small hills, is popular among tourists to enjoy views of snowcapped mountains and breathtaking sceneries.

The most fascinating thing about Shailung is its unique landscape. One can enjoy views of mountains peaks like Gaurishankar, Jugal and Ganesh from the top of any of these 100 small hills. Not only snowcapped Himalayan peaks, one can also get excellent views of different peaks of the Mahabharat range from Shailung. 

According to locals, tourists can enjoy view of lush forests and terraced land of Sindhupalchowk toward west, and beautiful villages like Doramba of Ramechhap in eastern and southern direction.

Not only natural beauty, Shailung has religious and cultural significance too. Locals say saints mediated in Shailung in the Satya Yuga. They say these 100 hills that we say today are the remains of the 100 saints.

There are different religious sites like Dharma Dhoka, Mahadev Temple, Hanuman Dhoka, Jareshwor Mahadev, Gai Dhunga and Bag Dhunga in Shailung. These sites attract thousands of pilgrims during major festivals. Shailung is considered sacred by both Hindu and Buddhist followers. 

Heavy snow blankets Shailung area during winter season, drawing visitors and merrymakers from far and wide. 

Bijuli Shrestha, a local of Sailung, says the amazing landscape of Shailung has been attracting hundreds of visitors. The growing tourist numbers have prompted Shailung Rural Municipality to build necessary infrastructures to assure tourists of pleasant stay.  

The rural municipality has been organizing training for locals of Kalapani, Jhor, Managaun, Paitee, and Dhunge to start homestay service, according to Bharat Prasad Dulal, chairperson of Shailung Rural Municipality. Similarly, the rural municipality has constructed road to Kalapani which serves as the base camp of Shailung. Similarly, stone steps have been built from Kalapani to Shailung. Similarly, the rural municipality has installed sign posts on the trail so that visitors do not have any problem to reach Shailung.

Shailung can be reached after a hike of 45 minutes from Kalapani. 

According to Rameshwor Upreti, chairperson of Shailung-8, the rural municipality has taken the policy of encouraging locals to start hotels and homestays in lower areas so that the beauty of upper area remains unspoiled.

A hotel has already started operation in Kalapani. Jhor and Managaun already have homestay facilities. The rural municipality has announced subsidy for people interested to start hotel in Shailung.
