Sangita Rai breaks 12-year-old national record in weightlifting

Eight new national records set 

KATHMANDU, April 12: Sangita Rai has set a new national record in 48-kg weight category of the ongoing first Inter-club National Weightlifting Tournament on Wednesday, breaking the existing record set over a decade ago. 

The departmental team Nepal Police Club’s Rai broke the 12-year-old national record of 53.5 and 118.5 kgs set by Nita Thapa in snatch and total categories, respectively, in 2006. The new records are of 54 and 123 kgs respectively. Likewise, Rai also improved her own record lifting 69 kg in clean and jerk in 66-kg weight group. She carried 67 kg on her second lift, and improved her previous record by lifting 69 kg on the third.  In snatch, the other departmental team’s Tribhuvan Army Club’s Manisha Ranabhat won silver by carrying 116 kg and Rita Gurung won bronze by carrying 93 kg. 

In junior 48-kg category, Galaxy Fitness’s Karina Chaudhart lifted 93 kg to win the gold medal, while Divine Physical Fitness’s Pallavi Chaudhary won silver lifting 93 kg and Galaxy’s Radha Bhujel won bronze lifting 35 kg. 

Eight new national records in the women’s category were set on the day.  

The other departmental team Nepal Police Club’s Devi Kumari Chaudhary also set new national record in 53-kg senior woman’s categories.  She broke the national record set by Sanju Chaudhary of 63 kg in the 23rd Men’s and eighth Women’s National Weight-lifting Championship this year by lifting a total of 145 kg. Likewise, Kharsal Youth Club’s Sarswati Chaudhary won silver lifting 85 kg. 

In junior of the same weight category, Om Fintess and Order Suppliers’ Sanju Chaudhary also created three national records. She improved her own record set in the 23rd Men’s and eighth Women’s National Weightlifting Championship. Her previous record was 63 kg in snatch, 82 kg in clean and jerk and 145 in total, while she improved the record by lifting 64 kg in snatch, 84 kg in clean and jerk and 148 in total. 

Similarly, in women’s 58-kg weight category, Sports Hive’s Shital Ghimire won a gold medal in lifting 66 kg. Kharsa’s Kajal Yadav won gold lifting 97 kg in junior category and Birgunj United’s Rabina Basnet won the silver lifting 90 kg. 

In the tournament played at Sports Hive Bar and Lounge in Lalitpur, in men’s 56-kg senior weight category, Army’s Tula Ram Mahato won the gold medal lifting 182 kg, while Army’s Santosh Thapaliya won silver lifting 165 kg and Birgunj Physical Fitness’s Ashok Kumar Sah won bronze lifting 125 kg. In junior of the same weight category, Kharsal’s Ram Kumar Yadav won the gold lifting 181 kg, while Kharsal’s Lal Babu Paswan won silver lifting 153 kg and Birgunj United’s Raja Shah Kanu won bronze lifting 135 kg. 

In men’s 62-kg weight category, Army’s Raju Chaudhary won gold lifting 210 kg, while Nepal Police’s Mui Lama became second lifting 201 kg and Armed Police Force’s Subhash Kumar Shah claimed bronze lifting 165 kg. Also, in junior’s weight category, Kharsal’s Ramesh Jha won gold lifting 160 kg, while Divine Physical Fitness’s Ganesh Ranabhat secured silver lifting 156 kg and Birgunj United’s Sajaruddin Alam got the bronze lifting 150 kg.
