Rs 276.2m Indian aid for embankment

KATHMANDU, April 28: India has provided Nepal aid worth Rs 166.3 million Tuesday. Indian envoy Rakesh Sood handed over a cheque to Bishnu Prasad Paudel, Minister of Water Resources, on behalf of the Government of India for the construction of embankments along Bagmati, Kamala, Lalbakeya and Khando rivers. India has been assisting Nepal in works relating to extension of embankments along rivers flowing into India from Nepal for controlling floods in Nepal and adjoining territories in India.



The embassy informed that the assistance is being extended in accordance with the decisions of the Nepal-India Sub-Committee on Embankment Construction. Last year also, India had provided assistance worth NRs 165 million for similar activity. The total Indian grant aid for embankment construction now stands at 317.50 million.



The ambassador also signed four separate Memorandums of Understanding with Shankar Prasad Koirala, Secretary, MoWR, to provide grant assistance of NRs 109.96 million to the Department of Water Induced Disaster Prevention (DWIDP) for construction of (i) emergent protection works on Trijuga River in Udayapur District; (ii) extension of embankment along right bank of Sunsari River, Narshing VDC in Sunsari District, (iii) river training works on Lakhandehi river in Sarlahi District and (iv) river protection works on Kankai River in Jhapa district.
