Some schools are already preparing to shift to other locations. The river has approached the playground of the Shanti Lower Secondary School so the administration is searching for a new location to move.[break]
“The river after eroding 150 meters of land is now flowing near the playground so we must move the school to other location before the rainy season starts,” said the school principal Nandaram Budha.
“We have already bought five kattha (0.42 acres) of land for the school but due to lack of school building we will have to take classes in the open air,” added Buda.
Adding to the plight, a teacher at National Lower Secondary School Dhan Bahadur Bogati said two schools have already been displaced and more are under threat.
Rapid deforestation in the Chure region brought the situation, locals said. ´When there are no trees to hold the earth, river easily penetrates and washes away the land,” said Bogati.
Simli River flowing at the edge of the Chure region has been changing its course constantly and if the land erosion continues for some more months then 500 families of Ratipur face inundation risk, informed Hari Bahadur Rawat, former chief of the VDC.
“Its not just the school but several village in the district are at risk. So authorities should take preventive measures as soon as possible,” said Rawat.
