Rights activist Ghimire bags Help for Self-Help Award

KATHMANDU, Nov 9: Human Right Activist Durga Ghimire has bagged the Help for Self-Help Award for 2012. The Award established by Norwegian NGO Stromme Foundation in recognition of protecting the rights of women and children carries a purse of Norwegian Kroner 100,000 (about Rs 1.5 million).



According to a press statement issued by Stromme Foundation, Ghimire was provided the award in recognition of her passion and commitment toward protecting the rights of women and children, especially those victims of human trafficking and sex slavery. [break]



Ghimire is the Founder Chairperson of ABC Nepal, an NGO working for the cause of victims of human trafficking and sex slavery.



“We are very happy that the committee has chosen to give this year´s award to Durga Ghimire. Through her works she has managed to put human trafficking and sex slavery on the political agenda in Nepal,” said a statement of the Stromme Foundation.



The Award will be given to her amidst a special ceremony in the Norwegian town of Kristiansand on November 28. “I have decided to utilize the award money for the rehabilitation of the victim of trafficking,” Ghimire told Republica.
