KATHMANDU, Nov 10:  The National Examination Board (NEB) announced the results of the Class 12 grade enhancement examination on Thursday. Like in the past, this year also the results of the examination show progress up to 75 percent, while the NEB stated that the results should be above 80 percent.

According to the chairman of the NEB, Mahashram Sharma, it is witnessed that the teaching and learning process in the classroom is weak due to the poor results of Grade 12.

In the regular examination of Grade 12, there are a huge number of students receiving non-gradable scores. A total of 117,882 students appeared in the grade enhancement examination. Out of them, 88,947 students have passed. Around 54,672 students took the grade enhancement examination for the English subject.

About 52 percent of the students failed in the regular result of grade 12 published by the NEB on September 3. According to the NEB, 1,88,410 students who participated in the examination were not able to get admission to the bachelors level.

The number of students who got non-grading was more than students who received graded results. The NEB published the results according to the Grading system 2078 to include those who scored less than 35 percent marks in theoretical subjects as 'non-grading'.

According to Krishna Ghimire, deputy controller of grade 12 of the NEB, out of a total of 363,800 students who participated on regular exams, the number of students who scored above 35 percent was 175,390 which counted for 48.10 percent. The remaining 51.90 percent i.e. 188,410 students are listed for non-grading.

According to chairman Sharma, the government made the school structure up to class 12. However, the valid positions for teachers are still only up to primary, lower secondary and secondary level. There are no valid positions prescribed for  class 11 and 12 yet. Two teachers are on grant in class 11 and 12. He argued that due to lack of sufficient teachers, the quality of Class 12 cannot be enhanced which has resulted in poor learning achievement.

“Government made school structure up to class 12 but could not continue learning after class 10,” Chairman  Sharma said, “Depending on the grant of  two-teachers, the teaching and learning of class 11 and 12 students cannot be excellent. Teachers and students should not have misunderstandings regarding how everyone will pass in the grading system.”

“More than 54,000 students participated in the grade enhancement exam of English subject,” Spokesperson Junga Bahadur Aryal said, “This indicates that we still have to spend the years with a shortage of English teachers at the secondary school level.”  

According to the data provided by Deputy Controller Krishna Ghimire, most students have failed in English. Among the total participants in the English subject, 101,113 students got 'non-grading' and only 1,567 received A+ grade. About 32,495 students failed in Nepali and only 1,624 who got A+.
