KAILALI, Oct 13: Flood victims from Dhansinghpur and Narayanpur Village Development Committees (VDC) had to return empty-handed from the VDC Office at Batanpur as relief materials couldn´t be distributed on Tuesday following Maoist intervention. [break]

Hundreds of families had reached Batanpur after hearing that the relief materials which had reached there on Monday would be distributed on Tuesday. The locals have been living on beaten rice for the last seven days.

VDC Secretary Gagan Singh Thakulla said that Maoist in-charge of Dhansinghpur and Narayanpur VDCs Moti Ram Jaishi had warned him not to distribute relief materials in his absence.

“We had come here with the hope that we would get to eat rice after seven days. But we now have to return empty-handed,” complained Gopal Saud of Dhansinghpur-1.

The victims-- 1,250 families from Dhansinghpur and 1,500 families from Narayanpur -- living on beaten rice and noodles distributed by Red Cross were scheduled to get 15 kg rice, two kg lentils, one liter edible oil and one kg salt on Tuesday.
