Recreating the Matya mood

By
Kathmandu, Sept 21: ‘Matya Photo Exhibition’ – an exhibition of photos shot during Matya, the festival of lights celebrated in Lalitpur every year on the third day of the dark fortnight of August, was inaugurated by Buddhi Raj Bajracharya, Chief of Lalitpur Development Society on Saturday at a function held at Saugal Chowk, Lalitpur.

The function, organized by Matya Organizing Committee with the support of The Image Park, a platform promoting photography, and Young Picasso, a community school of fine art, also saw the release of Matya Souvenir book.[break]

What makes the photo exhibition special is the fact that this is the first ever Matya-themed photo exhibition in the 1400-year-long history of the festival. Also, the photos that are being exhibited at the Patan Museum are taken by 11 photographers, nine of whom are amateurs, who attended a four-day photography workshop under Young Picasso and The Image Park before taking the pictures.

The photos on the exhibition have rightly captured the essence of Matya. The colors, musical instruments, portraits, masks, humor, candles, lights and traditional attires evident in the pictures have recreated the festive mood. Ajay Deshar, Director of Young Picasso remarked, “Matya is not only culturally significant, but also artistically rich, and these photos have captured just that.”

One of the trainers in the four-day photography workshop, Afzal Khan, Creative Head at Hyphen Advertising, said the exhibition made him proud. “I wouldn’t say that all photos in the exhibition are technically up to the mark, but like all thing creative, these photos have been able to capture and recreate the festive mood. I’m impressed with the students’ hard work and determination,” he said.

The exhibition will continue till September 23.
