Rape cases in Nepal peaked in past two months

KATHMANDU, Sept 27: In the past two months alone, as many as 420 cases of rape were registered in the country, according to Nepal Police headquarters.


Rape cases have surged mysteriously in Nepal despite the COVID-19 pandemic.


According to Nepal Police, the number of other crimes decreased during the lockdown except for rape and suicide cases.

Since the beginning of the lockdown enforced by the government, on an average, two girls were raped daily in this period. The Kathmandu Valley and Province 5 recorded the highest number of rape cases during this period.


According to the latest data provided by the Nepal Police headquarters, as many as 2,144 cases of rape were registered in the last fiscal year.


In the first month of the current fiscal year, 260 cases of rape were recorded which is the highest so far for any month.


The rape victims are usually under-age poor girls.


According to the latest data compiled by Nepal Police, 60 percent of rape victims are below the age of 15, especially between 11 to 15.


In the last fiscal year, more than 700 rape and attempted rape cases were recorded in Nepal.


The age group of rape victims ranges from six months to 75 years old in Nepal.
