KATHMANDU, July 6: The government has promoted Major General Gaurav Shamser Rana as Chief of General Staff of the Nepal Army.

A cabinet meeting held on Wednesday at Singha Durbar took a decision to this effect. Rana will be succeeding incumbent Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) Chhatra Man Singh Gurung after the latter retires from the military service. [break]

There are two posts of lieutenant generals -- one for Chief of General Staff and another for Chief of Staff -- in the Nepal Army. CoAS Gurung on Tuesday had recommended the names of major generals Rana and Nepal Bhusan Chanda for promotion to the defense ministry.

The posts of lieutenant generals had fallen vacant in the national army after Pawan Jung Thapa and Toran Jung Bahadur Singh retired recently from the military service. While Thapa retired some two months ago, Singh retired last Monday.

The cabinet meeting also appointed former brigadier general Shyam Bahadur Thapa as Chief Adviser to Rastriya Sewa Dal.

Among other things, the government also decided to provide Rs 3.7 million in assistance to various media organizations, including the Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ). Of the total amount, the FNJ would get Rs 1.5 million.
