KATHMANDU, April 12: The Labor Court has sentenced Rajdhani Dainik publisher Mahendra Sherchan to two months in jail along with a fine of Rs 5,000 for not complying with the court´s order.

The Labor Court on October 8, 2006 had ordered Sherchan to reinstate and provide due compensation to journalist Ram Prasad Dahal, who was sacked in March, 2005 without showing “valid grounds” for his dismissal.  A single bench of Agni Prasad Thapalia issued the verdict. [break]

The bench, however, added that Sherchan would not have to face the punishment if he reinstates and provides due compensation to Dahal within a month.

According to Dahal, the media house is yet to pay him Rs 200,000 for his salaries. “For eight years I have been fighting for justice. The company should pay me Rs 200,000 immediately,” he said.

Dahal claimed he was sacked for his ´anti-monarchy sentiments´. “They sacked me as I was against monarchy,” he said.
