Rajan Thapa takes lead on Day I

KATHMANDU, Nov 29: Rajan Thapa registered one-over 74 to take lead during the first day of the Surya Nepal Western Open Golf Tournament being held at the Himalayan Golf Course Pokhara on Sunday. [break]



Rajan started with a par on the first hole and made a five-foot birdie on the long par-3 second hole but dropped a stroke on the fifth hole. He scored a birdie on par-5 sixth hole and remained at pars on the next three holes to finish the front nine at one under par, 36. However, Thapa dropped a shot on par-3 10th hole and played at pars until he dropped one shot on the last hole by missing a short par putt.



Rabi Khadka, who shot four-over 77 remained three shots behind Rajan. His five-over 41 on the front nine included double-bogey on the first hole, bogey on the third hole and triple-bogey on the ninth hole with a lone birdie on par-5 sixth hole. However, he found his rhythm on the back nine hole scoring one under 35 by making birdies on holes 11th and 13th. Rabi only dropped a shot on par-4 17th hole on the back nine.







Surya Sharma marked six-over 79 for the third position. Sharma finished the front nine with two over 39 and ended up the day with another four-over 40 on the return. Surya made two birdies on hole number two. He had six bogeys and one double bogey in his card.



Nepal number 1, Shiva Ram Shrestha shared fourth position with Amateur number 1, Rupak Acharya with the score of seven-over 80.



Shrestha had a good start. He opened his first birdie on the sixth hole but dropped a shot on the very next hole and closed with a bogey on the ninth hole for a one-over 38 on the first nine. On the back nine he had disastrous triple bogeys on 11th & 13th holes, made another bogey on the 14th hole, and went down a birdie on the 16th hole for 42.



Deepak Acharya and Deepak Thapa Magar are both tied in sixth position with the score of nine over -par 82. One stroke further is Pashupati Sharma. Rupak Acharya is leading the amateur field by 10 shots as the other two amateurs Dipendra Rayamajhi and Pushkar Rajbahak shot 17-over 90.
