Quake damages properties worth more than Rs 2b of TU

KATHMANDU, May 22: The April 25 quake is estimated to have damaged the properties of the oldest university of the country, the Tribhuvan University (TU), amounting to more than Rs 2 billion.

According to Professor Gunanidhi Neupane, also the Rector of the University, the structures of the University's central office, the Central Library and various other buildings situated at Kirtipur have sustained damages, both partially and completely.


Besides this, some of the University's constituent campuses and various Research Centers have also been damaged due to the quake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale, added Rector Neupane.

Among the campuses sustaining damage are Patan Multiple Campus, Tri-Chandra Campus, Amrit Science College and Thapathali Engineering College etc.

The pillars as well as the walls of various buildings in Kritipur, for instance the Tribhuvan Memorial Building, have developed cracks, shared Devraj Adhikari, the Deputy Registrar of the University. "These buildings cannot be brought into use without re-construction and maintenance," said Deputy Registrar Adhikari.

Similarly, among the University's constituent campuses outside the valley, campuses in Gorkha, Lamjung, Biratnagar and Birgunj have sustained damages.

The University in Kirtipur has been running its operation from the building of the Education Faculty temporarily, according to Adhikari.

The University, being concerned about falling behind its academic calendar, was carrying out its operation accordingly following the quake, Adhikari confided.

Besides the damages to the physical properties, some land within the University's premises have also been caved-in. RSS
