KATHMANDU, May 7: Progressive literary figure Shyam Prasad Sharma has passed away at 4 am today morning at his residence in Kathmandu.
Sharma had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease also known as 'dementia' for three years.
His body will be kept at Kamaladi-based Nepal Academy from 10 am to 2 pm and taken to Pashupati Aryaghat for cremation at 3 pm, Devi Nepal, a literary figure close to Sharma told Republica Online.
Far from progressive
Sharma is known as progressive literary figure in Nepal. He belongs to the genre of essay.
He was founder chairperson of Progressive Writers’ Association(PWA) established in 2009 BS.
Following what is commonly known as 'Sahid Kanda' meaning 'killing of people to contain anti-government movement', he was put behind bars by the then autocratic regime for his involvement in democratic movement.
He made his debut into literary career from inside the prison. In 2001 BS when he was serving a jail term, his poem Sandesh meaning message was published in Bhitte patrika(wall magazine) .
Sharma is survived by his only daughter.
