Forcing locals to butch the injured deer, a group of personnel stationed at Hasposa police post had venison for dinner on Monday.
A three-member probe team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at Sunsari District Police Office (DPO), Bidha Nanda Majhi, is investigating the case.
“The team has already reached the spot of incident and has started interrogating the police personnel and locals implicated in the case,” said Superintendent of Police, Ganesh Thapa. [break]
The police team comprising Sub-inspector Kamal Karki, Assistant sub-inspectors Ganesh Shrestha and Durga Limbu, and personnel Gyan Shrestha, Nirmal Magar and Pasang Tamang had reportedly consumed some seven kilograms of venison after butchering the wild animal.
However, it is still not clear as to what happened to remaining venison as the deer was reportedly weighted around 30 kilograms.
The deer with a leg injury was spotted by the local Seuti river near Charkoshi Forest on Monday evening.
“At this point, no one has pleaded guilty,” said Majhi. “Facts will come to light after we talk with few other policemen and the locals,” he added.
As per the National Park and Wild Life Conservation Act (1973), if convicted, the alleged police officers will face a fine up to Rs 10,000 or face imprisonment up to two years or both.
Meanwhile, Rajendra Raut, Chief of the District Forest Office, said that they are finding it hard to investigate the case as no complaint has been filed in the matter yet.
