KATHMANDU, June 9: Prices of major food commodities like rice and lentils have increased by Rs 4 to Rs 20 per kg compared to prices record a month ago. However, prices of edible oil and sugar have come down during the period.
Pabitra Bajracharya, president of Nepal Retailers´ Association, said price of food commodities have increased in the domestic market as India is supplying these commodities to European market as demand there is higher. [break]
India is the major supplier of food commodities to Nepal. “As we have to depend on India for most of the food commodities, we have to pay whatever prices the Indian suppliers fix. This makes food commodities dearer in the local market,” Bajracharya said.
He also said local rice has become dearer due to drop in paddy production last year. Price of rice varieties like Pokhareli, Jeera Masino and Sanwa Jeera have increased by Rs 5 per kg each to Rs 60, Rs 65 and Rs 60 per kg, respectively.
Likewise, price of Taichin variety of beaten rice has increased by Rs 4 per kg to Rs 84 per kg. Similarly, big and small black lentils are selling at Rs 100 and Rs 100 respectively, up by Rs 4 per kg each.
Similarly, price of green grams (Mung Khosta) has increased by Rs 13 per kg to Rs 140 per kg, while prices of small green grams and lentil has increased by Rs 10 per kg each to Rs 130 and Rs 110, respectively. Pigeon bean (Rahar Dal) has become dearer by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 120 per kg.
According to the association, prices of different varieties of edible oil have come down by Rs 5 per liter. Price of mustard oil has dropped to Rs 150 per liter, soybean oil is selling at Rs 135 per liter and sunflower oil now costs Rs 140 per liter. Likewise, price of sugar has come down by Rs 3 per kg to Rs 72 per kg.
