“The peace process needs to succeed and the constitution needs to be prepared within the deadline,” said Dr Yadav while inaugurating the Human Rights National Magna Meet in Kathmandu on Tuesday.
Over 150 civil society organizations are taking part in the three-day meet to discuss situation of human rights, impunity, civic security, peace process, transitional justice, climate change and food security, migration and rights issues to be included in the new constitution. The organizers said that the gathering of civil society organizations in Nepal is first of its kind.

The president´s call to meet the deadline of constitution-drafting comes amidst fears that the political parties may miss the deadline due to growing differences among themselves and deepening political stalemate.
Addressing the gathering of members of human rights community and civil society, the president further stressed the need for incorporating Nepal´s commitments to a number of international human rights instruments in the new constitution.
“Human rights will be limited to ideals if people´s rights to food, shelter and clothing are not ensured,” the president said while referring to the need for translating human rights commitments into practice.
