KATHMANDU, Sept 16: With political stalemate prolonging, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Sunday pressed top leaders of the major political parties for early consensus and end the current crisis.

During a meeting called by the president at his residence in Shital Niwas this morning, the state head asked the leaders to forge consensus, at the earliest, on whether to go for reinstatement of Constituent Assembly (CA) or for fresh polls, Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar, co-ordinator of United Democratic Madhesi Front, said after the meeting. Emerging from the meeting, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said the president expressed deep concerns over the prolonged political stalemate and cautioned the leaders that it would be impossible for the country to go ahead like this for long.

Gachchhadar, who is a deputy prime minister in the current government, also said the top leaders will, for one last time, try for consensus for reviving the CA during their next meeting scheduled for 4 later in the day.

“Whether we decide to revive CA or agree to go for new elections, in either case, consensus is required,” Gachchhadar said. He also said that in the event of failure to forge consensus for CA reinstatement, there would certainly be the formation of a consensus government that would oversee new elections.

"Anyone from any party, including UDMF, can be the next prime minister, then," he said.

Echoing him, Khanal also said considering the progression of talks and current political situation, the country is now  headed to fresh elections.
