The Legislature-Parliament had on August 1 endorsed the Bill to this end. Before the endorsement of the bill, the parliament went through intense discussions about it.
The Act recommends stern action against those proved guilty in meting out physical and mental torture to anyone on the charge of practicing witchcraft.
The National Women's Commission in 2067 BS had tabled a proposal at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare Ministry, demanding that those involved in meting out inhumane treatment to women be brought to justice. The proposal took a form of an Act after six years.
The Act has recommended jail sentence from five to ten years and fine up to Rs 100,000 to those convicted of maltreatment to anyone on the charge of witchery. The Act also recommends punishment (three months in prison and fine of Rs 30,000) for those abetting such crime. RSS
