KATHMANDU, April 9: Pramila Rijal Chaudhary of the Armed Police Force (APF) set a new record in the women’s 400-meter race and won the gold in the 100-meter dash too, on Thursday, at the ongoing Fifth National Games.[break]
Chaudhary bettered her own record of 50.90 seconds that she had set in the 400-meter heats yesterday, with a time of 59.60 seconds. Ther previous record of 60 seconds had been held since 1987 by Chandra Kala Thapa of Kathmandu.
Sabitri Nepali of the Nepal Police came in second for the silver, at 1.03.07 seconds; and Manisha Adhikari of the Western Region bagged the bronze.
In the 100-meter dash, Chaudhary broke the tape at 12.72 seconds. Chandra Kala Thapa (12.80 seconds) and Keshari Chaudhary (12.89 seconds) earned the silver and the bronze for the Nepal Police.
Initially, Chaudhary wasn’t as jubilant in her victory as one would have expected; maybe it had all to do with her not peaking at the right moment. “That was not my best timing, as I have completed the 400-meter race in 58 seconds during training,” she said. “I have have trained at this event for the last three years at the APF, and I had, in fact, taken special training for the last six months.”
Rasaili, Maharjan win golds in karate
But as if realizing the significance of the momententous occasion she was now a part of, she soon turned into a gushing victor.“I could not have done this had I not trained with my coach Sushil Sumsher Rana; I want to thank him for believing in me,” said the happy Chaudhary, a permanent resident of Chisapani, Ilam.
In the men’s 100 meters, Gopal K.C. of the Nepal Police clinched the gold, finishing in 11.03 seconds, while Tilak Ram Mahato of the Western Region and Yogendra Dhimal of mid Western Region came in second and third, respectively.
In the 400 meters, Suman Bhattarai of the APF took the gold, with a time of 50.93 sec, leaving behind his colleague Balkrishna Chaudhary (51.59 seconds), who took the silver; Gopal K.C. of the Nepal Police came in third.
Meanwhile, in women´s high jump, Keshari Chaudhary of the Nepal Police clinched the gold by clearing 1.48 meters, in the process adding another gold to her name and taking her overall haul to two. On Wednesday, she had won a gold in the triple jump, setting a new national record. Barsha Bhattarai of the Mid- Western Region and Sita Hajam of the Eastern Region earned the silver and bronze, respectively.
Karate: Four golds for Central region
Central Region dominated the day by winning four gold medals in Karate in the Fifth National games on Thursday.
In men’s over 80 kg category, Ram Saran Twati of Central Region defeated Pramod Shrestha of Eastern Region for the gold while Dan Bahadur Sunwar of Mid Western Region and Digamber Panta of Far Western Region bagged the bronze.
In 80 kg, Binod Shakya of Central Region clinched the gold by defeating Lal Bahadur Rana Magar of Far Western Region. Bikram Banjada of Nepal Police and Dev Chandra Waiba of APF won the bronze.
Sasanka Shrestha of Central Region and Padam Basnet of Nepal Police won the gold and silver respectively in men’s 70 kg event while Bhim Mahat of Far West and Hari Bahadur Gharti of Mid Western Region won the bronze.
In 65 kg, Mukunda Maharjan of Central Region clinched the gold by beating Siddiki Taj Fabbar of Eastern Region. Suman Joshi of Far Western Region and Sunil Bahadur Gurung of Western Region bagged the bronze.
In 75 kg, Diger Dev Bhatta earned the gold for Nepal Police while Saroj Baija of Far Western Region won the silver. Narayan Shrestha of PLA Sports Club and Kasam Lal Lama of Eastern Region bagged the bronze.
In women’s above 60 kg event, Ganga Adhikari earned the gold for APF and Budha of Mid Western Region stood second. Pavitra Khadka of Eastern Region and Rauati Saud took the bronze.
In 48 kg, Srijana Shrestha bagged the gold for Central Region while Ishwori Thapa of Far Western Region bagged the silver. Kalpana Basnet of Armed Police Force (APF) and Kiran Karki of Nepal Police took the bronze.
Roji Nagarkoti of APF and Roshni Khadgi of Central Region took the gold and silver respectively in 53 kg category while Suvadra Shrestha and Rina Magar of Mid Western Region won the bronze.
Wrestling: Satemdra Yadav clinches gold
Satendra Yadav of Central Region clinched the gold in men’s 120 kg wrestling by defeating Nagendra Yadav of Eastern Region in the final. Karandev Bhatta of Far Western Region and Mohammad Umar Manihar won the bronze.
In 96 kg, Praladh Yadav of Western Region won the gold, Bajrakisor Yadav of Central Region silver and Bindeshwor Vadav of Eastern Region and Jaysingh Negi of Far Western Region won the bronze.
In 66 kg, Manoj Yadav of Eastern Region earned the gold while Long Yadav of Central Region won the silver, while bronze went to Ram Bahadur Dagaura of Far Western Region and Pawan Kumar Shrestha of Nepal Army.
Suvash Yadav of Central Region clinched the gold in men’s 60 kg and Jawahar Sahani bagged the silver. Mritunjaya Yadav of Eastern Region and Jogendra Yadav of Western Region won the bronze.
Squash: Hira wins men´s single
Hira Bahadur Thapa won the gold medal in squash in men’s single’s event on Thursday by defeating Sudip Bahadur Singh 9-4, 9-4 and 9-3 in the ongoing Fifth National Games held at Squash Court, Satdobato.
Suraj Gurung and Prajwal Pradhan secured third position.
In women’s single’s, Bhawan Sunwar defeated Chhitij Gurung 9-0, 9-2 and 9-3 for the gold. Krishna Thapa won the bronze.
Volleyball: Finalists confirmed
Nepal Police and Western Region will meet in the final of Women’s Volleyball in the ongoing Fifth National Games.
Western Region defeated Far Western Region and Nepal Police beat Central Region in straight sets to book their places in the final.
