KATHMANDU, April 8: Nepali Congress (NC) Vice President Ram Chandra Paudel on Sunday argued that the issue of federalism has become complicated due to false claims and promises made by the UCPN (Maoist) during their people´s war.

Addressing the concluding ceremony of NC´s Awareness Campaign in Basantapur, Kathmandu, Vice-president Paudel, who is also leader of the main opposition party in the parliament, alleged that the Maoists had made false promises to different caste groups that each of them would have a separate state when the country becomes a federation. “I want to know how many caste-based federal states the Maoists want to create?” he asked.

Paudel argued that NC is not against federalism, but that federal states in the new state restructuring should be demarcated keeping in mind economic viability.

Paudel asked all political parties to be open minded when discussing about delineation federal states. “The report submitted by State Restructuring Commission is not perfect. It will create disorder in the country,” he argued.

Paudel also criticized the UML and the Maoists for failing to convince a caucus of lawmakers belonging to ethnic community about their party´s stance and changing their party´s position in their tune. “If a party is run by caucus why is there a need of Balkhu [i.e. UML headquarter] and Parisdanda [i.e. Maoist headquarter]?” he posed a question.

Foreign interference at its peak: Dr Koirala

NC CWC member and lawmaker Dr Shekhar Koirala alleged that growing interference of foreign powers has pushed Nepal on the brink of crisis.

Addressing the rally, Dr Koirala said that the meddling of foreigners in Nepali politics has worried both India and China lately.

"India has grown sensitive over its security due to foreign interference. China, likewise, has started feeling insecure over foreigners´ maneuvering on Tibet issue," he said.

He also alleged that various western countries including European Union have been spreading Christianity in Nepal in the name of secularism. "It is no more a secret that European Union is spreading Christianity in Nepal under the garb of secularism," he further said.

NC lawmaker Narahari Acharya alleged that western countries are spreading Christianity by luring people with money. "NC strongly protests such kind of forceful religious conversion. But this does not mean that NC is against religious freedom," he said.
